| Ice Skating Returns to Cumberland C&O Canal |
|
Many area residents have fond winter memories of ice skating at "Candoc" in years goneby. Now, skaters can once again rummage through their attics, cellars and garages to dig out those treasured "flying shoes."
Canal Place and the National Park Service have joined together to provide an outdoor venue for ice skating beginning Christmas Day, 2007. Of course, as we all know, we must rely on dear Mother Nature to provide us with the necessary spell of cold temperatures to insure a safe skating surface.
The National Park Service has constructed a sturdy set of stairs to provide access to the C&O Canal Basin. In addition, the Park Service has also drained the basin to approximately 2 feet. There is a minimum requirement of 4 inches of ice to permit skaters on the ice. Canal Place personnel will check the ice at regular intervals to determine if the surface is safe. If the ice is thick enough, skating will be available daily from 12 noon until dusk.
There is no fee to skate. Although there is no skate rental this year, skaters can go to The Cumberland Trail Connection on weekends to sharpen their skates.
Skaters are encouraged to park in the Howard St. lot and to utilize Canal Place restaurants and shops to warm their toes and enjoy refreshments. For additional information skaters may call 301-722-8226.
Above all, we want everyone to have a wonderful holiday and winter season by staying healthy and safe. Please take time to read the following guidelines so that we can all enjoy this beautiful time of year as we build new skating memories with our friends and families in "this most beautiful playground of all," western Maryland!
